Cabinetmaker Adolf Rius, author of an Art Deco bedroom

With Adolf Rius Satorra (1904-1987), representing the third generation of cabinetmakers established in Esparreguera during the second half of the 19th century, the Rius family reached its creative peak. A notable example is the Art Deco bedroom from 1933, commissioned by businessman Josep Elias Serra for his engagement to Alicia Pascual Reyes. In 1994, Alicia donated it to the Barcelona City Council, following her husband's passing. Initially housed at the Museum of Decorative Arts, it now forms part of our Collection of Historical Furniture.

The bedroom comprises a bed flanked by two bedside tables, a wardrobe, and an original dressing table featuring a circular moon design with bevelled voravious in geometric shapes. The furniture is finished in walnut veneer. The distinctive and elegant elements of the set include the compact black-painted legs with rounded front edges, present in each piece of furniture. These are intersected on the side by four cylindrical light-coloured wooden rods of gradually decreasing length. The bedroom serves as an exemplary emblem of the quality and originality of Adolf Rius's workshop productions in the 1930s, few of which have survived.
