Furniture from Editorial Gustavo Gili to the Collection

The headquarters of Editorial Gustavo Gili in Barcelona (founded in 1902 and specialising in architecture, design, art, photography and fashion) was designed by architects Joaquim Gili and Francesc Bassó, and built between 1954 and 1960. The following year it won the FAD Architecture Prize.

The building was acquired last year by Barcelona City Council, which will repurpose it as a public facility. The building is one of the few examples of modern industrial architecture from the 1950s to retain its original character, and until 2021 it was still fully operational in the city centre.

Inside, it retained a large part of the original furnishings and a representative selection was preserved. Thus, two office tables, an auxiliary bookcase and a bookcase cupboard (c. 1960) produced by Mobilform SL in wood and iron; a boardroom armchair (c. 1960) designed by Lluís Gili and produced in wood by Muebles Muntaner; and a low table with glass tile and two Barcelona chairs designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, produced by Knoll International, have become part of the Collection.
